When it comes to music, it’s rare that a cover outshines the original, especially when the original is so beloved. However, heavy metal band Disturbed has managed to come close with their cover of “The Sound of Silence.” According to Wikipedia, “The Sound of Silence” was originally written by Paul Simon and released by Simon & Garfunkel in 1964. It was originally called, “Sounds of Silence.” The song features the famous opening lines, “Hello Darkness, my old friend/I’ve come to talk with you again.”
Disturbed released the song, which was featured on their album “Immortalized,” as a single in December 2015. The track went on to become a hit for the band, going to No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. On the heels of their cover’s success, the band performed the song live on “Conan” back in March 2016. Disturbed’s lead singer, David Draiman, is seated as he sings. At the beginning of the song, he sings in low whispers. As the song progresses, you are privy to the strength, emotion and richness of his vocals. More than 5 million people have enjoyed Draiman’s soul-moving cover of the famous Simon & Garfunkel tune which is posted on the “Conan” YouTube channel, Team Coco.
